When I hit the Philippines I really slacked on my journal keeping. There was an unbelievable amount of stuff to do and such little time, even though we knew we'd be there for 3 weeks.
Would happen was James and I would meet someone and they'd list off twenty places to go and check out, but we didn't know the geography of the Philippines well at all so it wouldn't really mean much. Then we'd meet ten more people that day listing off 20 places to go each... Eventually we got a pretty good grasp on most things, but it took time.
On this day James and I slept in, it was a good sleep after a long time of having to wake up and be somewhere, we had rice, eggs, and bread for breakfast at Glenda and Cyril's house. They also had some hot chocolate drink that was made locally, it was really thick and dark chocolaty with some chalkiness. It was alright for a few days, before I discovered the wonderful "3 in 1" instant coffee.
Glenda broght us to the wet market to pick up some food for lunch and dinner. James and I were very popular with the local Cebuanos, many, many eyes were on us as we made our way up and down the crowded market areas. Glenda had to answer many questions about us. We bought some small yellow banannas (SA-ging in Cebuano), a 2kg Tuna, some onions, peppers, and a small bag of charcoal.
We came back and watched/started to watch Spiderman 3 while dinner was being prepared. I think i've been fighting an infection the last few days. It's the same exhaustion, headache, tiredness that I tend to get from month to month.
After a late lunch we took our first Jeepney ride to Irvin's and then went into the city.
Irvin took us to a "larsian" which is a Filipino style Barbecue place with so much amazing and delicious food my mouth waters whenever I think of it. I have to get the pictures off of my other hard drive and post them. (This probably won't happen for a while...)
The Larsian had Chorizo, which is an awesome sweet sausage, it tastes like half brown sugar half pork fat, it was my favorite thing to get when we ate out, which was pretty much every day...
We also had "Sinaguillas" (I can't find this one on the internet,) but it's a small football shaped fruit about the size of a golfball. It's red when it's sweet and ripe but green and tart when it comes to you. It has a huge seed in the middle, so you have to eat the flesh off of the outer part of it. It's my second favorite fruit in the Philippines, next to mango...
Hi Adam- Thanks for the entry. Cool picture of jeepney. Sounds like you have really enjoyed sampling the many foods of your travels. Hope things are well with you despite your 'downs'.
ReplyDeleteThings are going pretty well here. We have had soooo much rain. If you were at ALE you would be pretty discouraged by now-forecasters have said there were 24 days of rain in June. I think for July we have had three days of sun so far.Today is one of them. We are thinking of you and hope you get the package soon. Will try to call you this weekend. Love ya, Mom
Happy Birthday Adam. Thinking of you on this the 16th of July. Hope you have a great birthday. Sounds like there are plans to celebrate your big day. We are pretty much doing the rainy day stuff again today. So much rain-and no sun. We are all getting pretty much sick of it. Love to hear from you on twitter. We look forward to your entries.
