Today and email domains...

Today was very laid back, spent the day in the basement watching baseball and messing around on the internet.  Watch my wedding video with my grandparents when they stopped by and also saw my aunt and uncle and their three boys.

I uncovered an old computer case in a different section of the basement and got it fired up after putting an old power supply in it and have been tinkering with it for a few hours.  I'm not sure what i'll do with it, maybe just put Ubuntu on it and file it away until someone needs a backup computer.

My email addresses have evolved like this:
At one time Altavista used to give free ad-supported dial-up, so when I was in 8th grade i think, we started getting that.  Then they discontinued their free access so....

We started getting NetZero, which was great at first, then they "nerfed" their free internet to something like 10 free hours a month and they would kick you off AND they would pop up an ad every 5-10 minutes that you had to click on or you get logged off.  The non-crappy version lasted for a few months then the crappy version lasted for one month until we started paying for their monthly unlimited.  I'm so glad we never used AOL....

I'm pretty sure I used my Netzero account for quite a while then I realized that it was based on paying them every month and if the money stopped so did all the access to your massive quota maxing collection of 10 megabytes of emails stored on their server, so I signed up for a Hotmail account.  I transitioned most into that account and never really used the Netzero again, I think about that same time I signed up for a Yahoo account but didn't really use it and then ultimately ended up becoming a junk email account (and still is...).  The Hotmail account died about two years ago, it hung around a while, I'd keep logging in to see if it was still active every 6 months which probably prolonged it longer than it should have.

That lasted all through high school and my first year of college...(I'll have to write a post sometime chronicling the evolution my P2P downloading)

Then I moved into a place in Plattsburgh for my third semester that had Verizon's DSL (I never had a verizon email address). However, this is when news of Google's email first started popping up and I signed up to be notified, but I think I got an invite from someone.  I switched over to that pretty much instantly and forwarded all my other accounts to it or just closed them down (Except for the Yahoo one which doesn't let you forward unless you pay for it...so it drifted into obscurity only to be checked when I sign up for some junk software thing and need to confirm an address or something).  Now I have about 2.5 gigs of every email message I've ever sent or received sitting out in cyberspace somewhere being analyzed by some tracking computer to see what ads it wants to feed me in hopes that I'll click on them an buy something.  Well, that's at the very least...

So, thank you to my wife for bringing up this trip down memory lane...

Long story short, I think yahoo is ok for email, it just doesn't have the features that Gmail gives me for free. At least it's not a Hotmail address OR the worst of them all an @AOL.com address.  For some reason I put Yahoo above Hotmail.

I also think .edu address are on a sliding scale, yea it's cool to use them when you're a student, but if you graduated 5 years ago it might be time to upgrade, i think most schools cut you off anyway.  Maybe I'm just scarred by the awful interfaces that the .edu webmail had and with the amount that I check my email I don't really want to be reminded 15 times a day that I paid a ton of money to and spent 4 years of my life there.

In case you haven't heard....(in brief)

I'm not sure where this blog is going to go now that I'm back in the US for a little while.  The main intention of it was for my immediate family to stay current with my recent happenings in Hong Kong and for them to give anyone more distant a URL to catch up on me, but now they can just visit or give me a phone call.

I think I will still post some photos and twitter messages and my google reader shared items, but it will probably slow down drastically.  I'm not sure who is following this outside of the people that I regularly see and talk to so if you are interested in what I'm up to give me a call or stop by.  On the right there is also a way to sign up to  receive an email every time I create a post if you are so inclined.

I haven't posted much about this next thing on here mostly because of reasons I talked about earlier, i.e. people that I wanted to know first I told directly, then more found out through Facebook, and that is what I was comfortable with. If for some reason you are not a Facebook friend with me and I know you look me up or you can stop by or email me to see more pictures.

ANYWAY, this is a long winded way of saying I got married on May 12, 2010 in Hong Kong to a wonderful woman (Katy).

Here's a photo of us, if you want to see more please read paragraph 3 of this post :)

Back in the USA...

I'm not sure who else reads this blog besides my family, but just to catch you up if you read and somehow haven't heard I'm back in the US.  I arrived Friday afternoon in JFK after taking off Friday morning from Hong Kong.  I first had a 5 hour flight up to Tokyo, Japan then an hour layover and then a 12 hour flight to JFK around the Pacific Rim, then across Washington state and the northern midwest states before finally touching down in JFK.  I landed and got through customs pretty quickly then had about a 5 hour wait to get my Jet Blue flight to Burlington, VT.  Well it started out as a 5 hour wait, then it evolved into an 8 hour wait because of runway construction or something at JFK and some windy weather system moving in.  Jet Blue in JFK had a really nice terminal at JFK and I ate some good food and had lots of Wifi, then took a little nap before waking up startled that I was supposed to be boarding in 15 minutes after the time they told me had been pushed up from 10pm to 9pm.

I arrived in Burlington after a 45 minute flight at almost 1am, I sat on the runway in JFK for about 2.5 hours after boarding at 9:00pm.  I met my mom and dad right away after getting off and then grabbed my bags, went out into the chilly lower 50s early Vermont morning.

I had a decent sleep that night, but still felt like a zombie all of saturday, had long conversations with family members, then Karen and Tyler stopped by for a while.

Sunday I went out to breakfast with the family, then came back and lounged around, then took too long of a nap and threw off my schedule...

Today I was supposed to go fishing, but that is postponed until tomorrow.  I'll also play some music tomorrow morning.

Rediscovered lots of photos and pictures....here's one

----------------------------

Some thunder boomers rolling through this morning, a very rare occurrence in Hong Kong, there's heavy rains often but not much thunder and lightning.  You'd think they go hand in hand, but that's not the case.  So many more thunderstorms in New York, Plattsburgh gets about 34" of rain per year, while depending on where you are in Hong Kong you can get anywhere from 50" to 118".  Although it seems that on Lantau where I live we don't get that much rain at all, but I have heard that Hong Kong is in a drought and in the year that I've been here there was much less rain than usual.  I wasn't here at this time last year so I don't know what the weather was like.

We are in an Amber alert right now,

"The AMBER signal gives alert about potential heavy rain that may develop into RED or BLACK signal situations."

RED RAINSTORM SIGNAL
Heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 50 millimetres (2")in an hour, and is likely to continue.

BLACK RAINSTORM SIGNAL
Very heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 70 millimetres (2.75") in an hour, and is likely to continue.

Thai-la

Making a batch of naan right now with a recipe from a book Katy bought me, it's different from all the other recipes I've tried, but it looks ok so far.  I just finished kneading it and now I'm letting it sit for 20 minutes.

Going to clean up the banjo tonight also, I need to bring it back soon (good riddance).

The weather has turned nicer here, well it's warmer at least and the sun was out today.

I helped Khem move from the T.I. flat into his new temporary place yesterday.  I spent the weekend in Ma On Shan with Katy and family, the usual Sunday.  I gave Khem a call after getting back to Pui O and went right over, we made two trips and then he bought me a Pocari Sweat.

I went back to my flat after not feeling the greatest, but I drank almost 2 liters of water and that helped me.  Khem called me back at around 7:30, "Adam! I must to have you come to my home, I have thee wine bottle" so I went over.  The gracious host that he is, Khem always has you eat with him too, so we had some leftover curry pork appetizer and a curry chicken and "tal-ka-lee" (vegetable) for the main course.  We talked for a while, Khem talking about the plans for his company.

Then I returned to Sun Wai and proceeded to talk on the phone for about 2 straight hours.  It was all really good, getting things organized here, things prepared for leaving, things sorted for when I get back, all that...
